The European Academy of Phoniatrics (EAP) was founded with the purpose to have a phoniatric academy that supports the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) in organizing new multinational networks and to build up organizational structures and European quality standards on medical training and practice to endeavor the best phoniatric patient care.
With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the European Board Examination of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (E.B.E. ORL-HNS), the EAP will run the European Board Examination of Phoniatrics (E.B.E. Phoniatrics) every year.
A main topic for EAP is the information about and the organization of specific training programs and courses for physicians working in phoniatrics. Based on the UEMS-accredited phoniatric logbook, in a stepwise progress, these courses should cover the widespread spectrum of Phoniatrics.
Internationally, Phoniatrics is represented very differently. In some countries, Phoniatrics is a separate specialist training practiced in clinics and in medical practices as a separate professional group. In other countries Phoniatrics is an additional subject after completing specialist training, and in many countries a phoniatric training program for interested physicians is not yet offered.
In the coming years, an international fellowship program is to be developed, which should make it possible for physicians in countries without training opportunities to receive training in Phoniatrics. In addition, a program for specially designed observerships at highly qualified centers is to be set up to prepare our professional group as best as possible for the requirements and needs of our patients and to improve networking with other professional groups.

Training Course of the European Academy of Phoniatrics
According to the UEMS (Link: https://www.uems.eu/european-training-requirements), we have the conviction that the quality of care is directly linked to the quality of training provided to future phoniatricians. The EAP aims at improving Post-graduate Training across Europe i.e. in developing training standards, which are called European Training Requirements (ETR). The ETR set out the knowledge, skills, and competencies that a specialist must acquire during their training in order to practice independently and safely in Phoniatrics.
The EAP offers a basic Training Course for candidates who are interested in the European Board Examination of Phoniatrics “E.B.E. Phoniatrics” (UEMS – ORL Section)
The course follows the UEMS-accredited phoniatric logbook with didactic lectures and hands-on workshops. It provides a comprehensive program of all main topics of the fields of Phoniatrics: voice speech, language, pediatric audiology and swallowing. All topics will be presented by an esteemed faculty with speakers from all over the world.

European Board Examination E.B.E.-ORL-Phoniatrics
The European Board Examination in Phoniatrics (E.B.E. Phoniatrics) was established by the UEMS ORL Section and Board in cooperation with the EAP/UEP in February 2025.
It has been created to help harmonise the knowledge base amongst Phoniatricians throughout Europe and abroad. Some European countries have an end-of-training exam in order to evaluate the knowledge acquired during their training program. The European Board Exam is NOT an alternative to a national examination, where one exists.
The “E.B.E Phoniatrics” consists of two parts:
PART I: The written part I will last about 2 hours with 100 multiple choice questions. Only one answer is valid. No negative markings for incorrect answers.
PART II: Oral exam to complement the written part. Only those, who have successfully passed part I are eligible to sit part II.
The fee for the exam is 1300 €.
The forthcoming E.B.E. Phoniatrics will take place in Vienna/Austria from 29. August 2025 (written part I) to 30. August 2025 (oral part II).
Application requirements for E.B.E.-ORL-Phoniatrics
Phoniatrics training is offered differently in different countries. In some countries, preferably European countries, phoniatrics is a specialist training course with a specialist examination.
If you are applying for the European board examination, this specialist certificate is sufficient as admission. The same applies to candidates from countries where phoniatrics is a subspecialty recognized by national medical associations. Validation is carried out country-specifically using the UEP logbook.
A number of candidates will come from countries where phoniatrics does not exist yet. It is essential for these candidates to get their qualifications signed for the Experienced Tutor Examination. Proof of successful completion of the contents of the UEP-UEMS Phoniatrics logbook must be provided (Link: https://uep.phoniatrics.eu/uep-log-book/).
All official documents required for application must be translated into English (with official legal certification) and send together with a copy of the original.
Candidates who have passed the part I (written) and II (oral) and are specialists according to their national boards in their home countries will be honored with the title “Fellows of the European Academy of Phoniatrics”, independent, if they are from EU- or non-EU-countries.
Other successful candidates, only from UEMS countries (not certified as specialists yet) will receive a "Diploma of the European Academy of Phoniatrics", until they can provide a valid specialty certificate.
